The Opportunity WSDOT is currently looking for several enthusiastic engineers who have a passion for creative solutions, innovation, and can provide success in collaborative efforts in our South Central Region design offices located in Union Gap, Washington.
These positions are seeking entry-level and journey-level engineers, as well as college students projected to graduate from an engineering program by June 2024.
These positions support WSDOT’s mission by ensuring highway construction projects are designed and built in compliance with the standard specifications and contract plans.
This will be accomplished in design by the preparing of plans, specifications, estimates, reports, and other technical documents that will be used to improve the safety, quality, and capacity of the State’s Transportation System.
This opportunity is open for “in-training’, which means that depending on your qualifications, you may be offered a position at a lower level along with a formal on-the-job training plan to complete within a specified timeframe.
Successful completion of the training plan will result in a promotion to the next level within the job class series, and a minimum 5% pay increase.
What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Engineer 2 (in-training) will: Prepare Plans, Specifications, and estimates to WSDOT standards.
Serve as a designer performing a variety of skilled project development work.
Operate InRoads and MicroStation to create computer-aided engineering deliverables.
Prepare preliminary design and construction schedules.
Develop and check engineering design calculations and drawings.
Create and/or assist with the development and management of design schedules to aid in delivering projects on time.
Keep supervisors and office management informed of project progress, issues, or needs.
Effectively utilize design software to complete designs.
Conduct field reviews.
Write technical reports.
Communicate orally and in writing with designers, other team members, and support offices.
Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, at the Transportation Engineer 1 level one of the following are required: Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering or closely related field.
(Degree completed by June 2024) OR Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT).
To be considered for this opportunity at the journey-level, Transportation Engineer 2(TE2) the following are required: Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent as an entry level engineer in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or closely related field.
OR Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent as an entry level engineer in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or closely related field.
OR A master’s degree with a major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or closely related field.
In addition to one of the above, all candidates are also required to have: A valid driver’s license.
Possess a basic knowledge of transportation engineering principles and scheduling.
Communication Skills/Abilities: Ability to convey ideas and facts both orally and in writing to team members, supervisors, support groups and the public using a language that the audience will best understand.
Research and Analytical Skills/Abilities: Ability to utilize the Design Manual, Plans Prep Manual, Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, and other WSDOT manuals and policies when developing and documenting the design of transportation projects.
Physical Abilities: Ability to safely lift materials and equipment up to 40 pounds and assist with lifting up to 70 pounds throughout the work shift.
Ability to perform field work on various terrains and in varying climates for the purpose of obtaining field data for the preparation of plans, specs, and estimates.
Computer Skills/Abilities: Ability to use a computer and learn software used for the design of projects: such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, MicroStation, InRoads, and other engineering software specific to WSDOT.
It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have: Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT), or a Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering.
Knowledge and experience with exposure to design, construction, traffic, materials, program management, or other WSDOT related fields.
Advanced experience with computer software such as MicroStation (CADD), InRoads (Geometric design), P6 (Scheduling), Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
Important Notes Students graduating with an accepted degree prior to June 30, 2024, are eligible to apply for this position.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
