Hybrid/remote applicants must reside within PNWU’s five state region (Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Montana) at start of employment.
Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) was founded as a 501(c) (3) non-profit medical institution in 2005 aimed at increasing access to health care in medically underserved areas of the Pacific Northwest.
The University currently offers the degrees of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Arts in Medical Science, and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy enrolling over 550 students annually with plans to develop other programs and/or colleges.
Interprofessional education partnerships with other universities adds another 100 students to the population.
The campus includes 300 employees with academic programming spread over a five state region.
PNWU is located in Yakima, WA, a city of approximately 95,000 located in the south central part of the state near the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains in a major agricultural and outdoor recreation region.
It is approximately 140 miles from Seattle, 170 miles from Portland, and 200 miles from Spokane.

General Summary: Provides administration, leadership, and management of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) including oversight of operations and submission activities across departments, programs and colleges/schools at PNWU.
Works collaboratively with PNWU faculty, staff, students, and external research partners.
Supports Office of Scholarly Activity (OSA) initiatives related to research, scholarly activities, and grants.
Essential Job Functions: Oversees daily operations; develops and maintains standard operating procedures and policies for human subject’s research; maintains an understanding of federal regulations, state laws, institutional policies and procedures, and the guidelines governing human subjects’ research.
Maintains and updates the IRB registration and federal wide assurance with the Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP).
Develops and maintains an electronic library/toolbox of template documents to assist in the development and ongoing conduct of research.
Conducts pre-review of all IRB submissions (initial reviews, continuing reviews, annual check-ins, amendments, reportable events, adverse events, and personnel changes) prior to review of the IRB to ensure submissions are complete and compliant with federal regulations, state laws, institutional policies and the guidelines governing human subjects’ research.
Assigns IRB applications to members of the IRB for review; reviews resubmissions of studies that have received conditional approval to ensure that the conditions set by the IRB are met for final approval.
Manages notifications to researchers regarding IRB decisions and makes recommendations regarding regulatory determinations on proposed research.
Advises and briefs the IRB chair on submissions, any issues identified during review, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Consults with PNWU constituents and external partners to identify activities requiring IRB review and the type of review required.
Reviews requests for 'not human subjects research’ determinations to determine whether the projects meet the federal definition of research with human subjects.
Engages with IRB Institutional Official, as needed.
Identifies training needs of the IRB and schedules training sessions; maintains current IRB membership rosters; facilitates compliance audits; serves as the IRB software (Sitero Mentor) administrator by maintaining the electronic system and submission forms, troubleshooting issues, and works closely with software company to resolve technical issues.
Develops and maintains electronic filing systems required to securely store, protect, and archive records.
Serves as administrator and/or technical support for other departmental software (REDCap, CITI, etc.
) Provides clerical support for the IRB, to include meeting logistics, agenda development, meeting minutes transcription, document management, etc.
Performs other related duties as assigned and based on departmental needs including event planning and support.
Requirements: Education: • Required: Bachelor's Degree • Preferred: Master's Degree • Preferred: Certified IRB Professional (through PRIM&R) Experience: • Required: 4-6 years • Preferred: 7+ years in IRB Administration Desired Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Skill in effective communication (both written and oral); skill in independent decision making; skill in performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature; skill in problem solving; knowledge of administrative procedures and practices; knowledge of computer and network operating systems; knowledge of customer service principles and practices; knowledge of project management principles, processes, and techniques; ability to apply effective and accurate data entry and typing skills; and ability to operate relevant equipment required to complete assigned responsibilities for the position.
