Salary: $869 per Instructional Unit, not to exceed 10 IUs per academic quarter.
Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative adjunct faculty Counselor committed to community college students and their success.
This position is considered for renewal on a quarterly basis.
The work assignment will not exceed 200 hours per quarter.
This position is part-time, non-tenure track and works in person on the Yakima campus.
Reporting to the Dean - Student Services and in collaboration with Counseling & Advising department, the faculty Counselor may instruct classes with the approval of the supervising dean.
To the extent reasonably possible, the faculty Counselor shall keep abreast of developments in the fields of mental health counseling and academic advising.
Essential Tasks ESSENTIAL TASKS: The primary duty of a faculty Counselor shall be participating in the Counseling Center's ongoing program based on the individual's specific educational qualifications and experience, as assigned.
The faculty Counselor serves as a generalist responsible for providing services to meet the needs of our diverse student population enrolled at Yakima Valley College.
Following are the responsibilities of the faculty Counselor: Assist students with available information relating to vocational, academic, and developmental programs, including courses and activities in the district, and transfer requirements and general information regarding other institutions.
Counsel with students individually and in groups.
Serve as a referral person in cases where students may need additional medical, social, or educational help.
Assist students individually or in groups and/or classes to acquire and develop more effective study skills.
Provide career guidance and/or placement information to individuals or to groups and/or classes.
Serve as a consultant to students referred from other academic employees or from schools within the community college district Maintain a file of up-to-date transfer information on assigned institutions to help students in planning for additional education.
Maintain a flexible work schedule as assigned.
Assist vocational areas in the screening and selection of students, as required • Use online tools to maintain regular contact with students.
Assist with the coordination of incoming students through advising, registration, and orientation Develop files and interview students to determine grant/program eligibility.
Coordinate wraparound services for program participants.
Maintain accurate records of student contacts, time and effort, and written correspondence.
ABILITY TO: Read, understand and make recommendations based upon review of the following assessments and tests: Psychiatric evaluations, MMPI, mental health assessments, 504 plans, IEPs, etc.
Advocate for, research and refer to community resources.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Systemic oppression, racism, and equity concepts and applications in teaching, advising, and serving.
Legal and ethical issues in counseling Working on inter-professional teams and leading groups to fulfill their mission and goals.
Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in counseling, Psychology or Social Work Field from a regionally accredited institution Must include a supervised counseling practicum and/or internship at the graduate level, and/or hold a state license as a Counselor (LMFT, LICSW, LMHC, ESA, etc.
) Professional and educational preparation that includes: Assessing client needs, environments, strengths, and support networks to help them identify their goals.
Demonstrated experience with crisis response, triaging, and/or crisis management.
Work in fundamentals of counseling, lifespan development, multicultural counseling.
Career development and career counseling (or commensurate training within first year of hire) Experience collaborating and consulting with multidisciplinary teams.
Five or more years of experience in counseling services to include personal, academic and career counseling in a community college, university, high school, mental health, or social service field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Student development work experience in a community college or other higher education setting Experience working in a supervised counseling practicum and/or internship.
Demonstrated success working on behalf of students or clients of color, from low-income backgrounds, with disabilities or other traditionally marginalized students, identifying performance and outcome gaps and developing effective strategies to address the causes Multilingual, American Sign Language, Spanish, Native Languages or other.
Washington state licensure in the fields of mental health or social work or eligible to make application for state licensure.
